Big Data for Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials – 2nd Workshop
October 11, 2016 @ 09:00 - 15:00
FREELocation: Brussels Centre
We are pleased to announce the second in a scheduled series of workshops regarding supporting the SC5 domain within the project Big Data Europe (BDE). The aims of this workshop are to present the 1st use-case pilot and to introduce the outline and planning for the 2nd pilot, while encouraging active participation by EC officials, scientists and stakeholders.
The workshop is independently co-located with a conference organised by the EC project Melodies on “Exploiting Open Data”. More information can be found at: http://www.melodiesproject.eu/content/exploiting-open-data

Background information
The 1st SC5 pilot serves as a demonstration of the usefulness and flexibility of the BDE platform and tools in managing large volumes of climatic and weather numerical data. To this end, the pilot focused on the process of dynamical downscaling of climatic and meteorological data, which is an essential first step for any further analysis, assessment or processing in climate and related domains.
The 2nd Pilot will utilise large volumes of weather data to support decision making during hypothetical incidents of release of hazardous substances into the atmosphere. This pilot aims to identify the origin of such releases by making use of historical meteorological data and by forming a large database consisting of pre-computed dispersion data and measurements.
During this workshop, stakeholders will be informed in more detail about the design and aims of the 1st and 2nd use-case pilots and will be kindly asked to join in discussions covering the overall SC5 domain and the role of big data technologies in meeting the challenges identified.
