The Consortium of Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA) was presented during at several sessions of the IASSIST 2016 conference held in Bergen, 1-3 June 2016. The principal one session was the plenary session “CESSDA sets the stage for the data infrastructure of the future”, held on the second day of the conference.
This session presented to the audience the main CESSDA activities through engagement on international level for both internal and external projects.
Four presenters contributed:
- Vigdis Kvalheim (Deputy director at NSD, Chair of the session),
- Ivana Ilijasic Versic (Acting administrative director, CESSDA main office),
- Elena Sommer (ESS, researcher),
- Mari Kleemola (Development Manager, FSD).
The chair of the session presented to participants a quick overview of CESSDA’s history. Throughout its history CESSDA evolved from an informal group of European social science data archives to the current established research infrastructure recognized as one of the Landmarks on the 2016 ESFRI Roadmap. Now CESSDA is composed of 15 member countries plus 1 observer, and many other countries actively working towards membership.
The chair of the session also introduced three ongoing Horizon 2020 projects in which CESSDA is currently either involved or coordinating :
– CESSDA SaW – Strengthening and Widening
– Big Data Europe – Empowering Communities with Data Technologies
– SERISS – Synergies for Europe’s Research Infrastructures in the Social Sciences
The presentation also covered the internal CESSDA project in metadata management led by FSD – Finnish data archive – from the CESSDA consortium.
Two other presentations of CESSDA’s activities were made by Mike Priddy (Senior information systems engineer, DANS) and Trond Kvamme (Senior adviser, NSD) on Maturity Model for Assessing Data Infrastructures application developed within the CESSDA SaW project.
Finally John Shepherdson (Associate Director, Technical Services, UKDA) presented the another internal CESSDA project, the CESSDA Technical Framework project.
